Islamabad, July 11, 2025: Pakistan has decided not to send its national hockey team to India for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup 2025, citing security concerns and hostile sentiments emanating from across the border, government sources confirmed on Friday.
The tournament is scheduled to be held in Rajgir, India, from August 27 to September 7. However, Pakistan has conveyed its reservations regarding the deteriorating security environment, particularly in light of growing hostility and threats from extremist groups in India.
Sources in Islamabad stated that Pakistan has always advocated for keeping sports separate from politics, but India continues to politicise international sporting events, compromising the spirit of fair play and international cooperation.
The decision comes amid tense bilateral relations following recent geopolitical and military escalations, including the fallout from India’s failed military venture dubbed “Operation Sindoor.”
Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, Rana Mashhood, addressed the situation in an interview with a private news channel, clarifying that Pakistan’s participation is not entirely ruled out but will depend on a thorough security review closer to the tournament.
“Just like India failed in Operation Sindoor, our hockey team also aims to defeat India on their soil,” said Mashhood.
“But if we are not satisfied with the security assurances, we will not put our players at risk.”
The concerns stem not only from strained diplomatic ties but also from open threats issued on social media platforms allegedly linked to India’s right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Additionally, sections of the Indian media have begun spreading hateful and provocative content against Pakistan in the lead-up to the tournament, further escalating tensions.
Officials said that Pakistan’s final decision will hinge on security guarantees from the Indian government, as well as recommendations from relevant intelligence and sports authorities.
As of now, the situation remains fluid, but unless concrete steps are taken to ensure the safety and dignity of the Pakistani contingent, their participation in the Asia Cup remains unlikely.
