Lahore, July 24, 2025: Despite official claims of preparedness, Punjab has emerged as the province most severely affected by this year’s monsoon season, recording the highest number of deaths and injuries in rain-related incidents, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed in its latest report released Thursday.

Since the onset of the monsoon, 266 people have died and 628 have been injured across the country. The fatalities include 94 men, 46 women, and 126 children. In the past 24 hours alone, eight more deaths and six injuries were reported due to severe weather events.

According to provincial breakdowns:

  • Punjab recorded the highest toll, with 144 deaths and 488 injuries
  • Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) followed with 63 deaths and 79 injuries
  • Sindh reported 25 deaths and 40 injuries
  • Balochistan reported 16 deaths and four injuries
  • Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) recorded eight and seven deaths, respectively
  • Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) reported two deaths

In the last 24 hours, KP reported three deaths and five injuries, Islamabad and GB recorded two fatalities each, and Sindh reported one death.

Beyond human casualties, the monsoon has caused extensive damage to property and livestock:

  • 84 houses were damaged and 38 animals perished in the past 24 hours
  • Since the start of the season, 1,089 homes have been damaged or destroyed, and 366 livestock have died

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued fresh alerts for flash floods in local streams and nullahs of Dera Ghazi Khan, and urban flooding in low-lying areas of northeastern and eastern Punjab, effective Thursday evening and night.

The PMD stated that a seasonal low-pressure system over northeastern Balochistan, combined with moist currents from the Arabian Sea and a westerly wave, is currently influencing the upper parts of the country.

Rain, wind, and thundershowers are expected at isolated locations in:

  • Kashmir, KP, upper and central Punjab, GB, and northeastern Balochistan

Isolated heavy downpours may occur in:

  • Upper KP, central Punjab, and northeastern Balochistan

For Friday, hot and humid conditions will prevail in most areas, though isolated rain and thunderstorms are likely in G-B, upper K-P, northeastern Punjab, and Kashmir.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain alert, follow safety precautions, and stay updated with official weather advisories as monsoon conditions continue.
