Islamabad, October 2, 2025: France has conferred the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on renowned Pakistani artist Syed Jamal Shah in recognition of his lifelong contribution to arts and culture.
The award ceremony was held at the French ambassador’s residence in Islamabad, where diplomats, artists, and cultural figures gathered to celebrate the occasion.
Established in 1957 by the French Ministry of Culture, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is among the country’s highest honours for individuals whose work has significantly enriched the fields of arts and literature.
French Ambassador Nicolas Galey highlighted Shah’s artistic journey from Quetta, Balochistan—close to the ancient archaeological site of Mehrgarh, excavated by French researchers—and how this heritage influenced his work in sculpture, painting, printmaking, and acting.
Shah was also recognised as a mentor and teacher, particularly for founding Hunerkada College of Visual and Performing Arts, where he guided emerging artists for 15 years and promoted art as a tool of resilience and healing.
In 2023, he briefly served as Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, engaging with Pakistan’s diverse cultural legacy in crafts, folk traditions, archaeology, and tourism. Earlier, as Director General of the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), he hosted major cultural events in Islamabad. Currently, as Chairman of the Silk Road Culture Centre, he continues to advance international artistic exchange and dialogue.
On behalf of the French Minister of Culture, Ambassador Galey presented the insignia, praising Shah’s contribution to shaping Pakistan’s cultural identity and his role in strengthening Franco-Pakistani ties through the arts.
