Islamabad, October 3, 2025: State Minister for Interior Affairs Talal Chaudhry on Friday apologised for the assault on journalists at the National Press Club (NPC), a day after police stormed the premises during a protest and physically attacked media workers.
Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Chaudhry called the incident “deeply regrettable” and assured that the government would fully implement the demands presented by the journalist community. “We will address the issue in accordance with the guidelines of the press club and journalist organisations to ensure such incidents do not happen again,” he said.
The episode occurred when Islamabad police raided the NPC amid a protest organised by the Awami Action Committee. Journalists covering the event were manhandled, with visuals showing police personnel snatching cameras and mobile phones. The assault drew strong condemnation nationwide, with journalist bodies calling it an attack on press freedom and part of a wider campaign to intimidate the media.
Chaudhry stressed that the government stands with the media fraternity. “On my arrival at the press club yesterday, I assured journalists of my solidarity. I not only condemned the incident but also promised accountability,” he said.
The minister further stated that immediate measures had been taken in consultation with NPC leadership, including directions for strict action against those responsible. He said the Interior Ministry and law enforcement agencies remained in constant contact with the press club and would continue to extend full cooperation.
Earlier in the day, journalists staged a walkout from the National Assembly proceedings to protest Thursday’s events, adding to mounting pressure on the government to act decisively.
