Vishakhapatnam, October 9, 2025: India’s star opener Smriti Mandhana etched her name in cricketing history on Thursday, breaking former Australian captain Belinda Clark’s long-standing record for the most runs scored in a calendar year in Women’s One-Day Internationals (WODIs).

Mandhana reached the milestone during India’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 clash against South Africa at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. The left-hander surpassed Clark’s 1997 tally of 970 runs when she launched Ayabonga Khaka for a six in the eighth over of India’s innings.

She entered the match needing 11 runs to overtake Clark and went on to score 23 off 32 deliveries, including a six and a boundary, before falling to Nonkululeko Mlaba in the 11th over. The knock took her total to 982 runs in 18 innings this year — a new world record.

Mandhana’s exceptional run of form in 2025 includes four centuries and three fifties at an impressive average of 57.76, putting her on track to become the first-ever batter to breach the 1,000-run mark in a single calendar year in women’s ODIs.

Most WODI runs in a calendar year:

  • Smriti Mandhana (India) – 982 runs in 18 innings (2025)
  • Belinda Clark (Australia) – 970 runs in 14 innings (1997)
  • Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa) – 882 runs in 18 innings (2022)
  • Debbie Hockley (New Zealand) – 880 runs in 16 innings (1997)
  • Amy Satterthwaite (New Zealand) – 853 runs in 14 innings (2016)

Mandhana is also on the verge of another historic milestone, having accumulated 4,942 runs in 111 innings at an average of 47.06, including 13 centuries and 32 fifties. She now needs just 52 more runs to become only the second Indian — and the fifth player overall — to reach the 5,000-run landmark in Women’s ODIs.
