Islamabad, January 23, 2026: Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, held a meeting with United Nations Senior Coordination Officer for Climate and Environment and UNEP Focal Point, Alex Forbes, on Friday to discuss measures for environmental protection and the acquisition of carbon credits in the federal capital.
The meeting was attended by CDA Member Environment Esfandyar Baloch, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon, Director General Resource, and other senior officers. Discussions focused on leveraging international frameworks and green programs to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable development in Islamabad.
Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa said the Authority is implementing a comprehensive strategy for environmental protection and improvement of the capital city. He noted that CDA aims to fully benefit from global carbon markets and mechanisms for acquiring carbon credits.
He said several initiatives are underway, including increasing Islamabad’s green cover by converting brown areas into green spaces. He added that CDA is also working on a modern solid waste management project, which could facilitate carbon credit generation under international standards.
Highlighting ongoing transport initiatives, the Chairman said a fleet of 160 environmentally friendly electric feeder buses is operating successfully in Islamabad. He added that future expansion of electric tram systems and other eco-friendly transport projects could further support emission reductions and carbon credit acquisition.
Muhammad Ali Randhawa said that the completion of various development projects in the capital would not only improve public convenience but also help reduce carbon emissions. He also emphasized efforts to establish modern, scientific landfill sites in line with international standards to curb environmental pollution.
During the meeting, UN Senior Coordination Officer Alex Forbes stressed the importance of future technical assistance and cooperation. He said the United Nations would consider providing technical support to CDA for acquiring carbon credits under international frameworks and green initiatives.
The CDA Chairman underscored that technical cooperation with the UN and other international development partners is crucial to addressing environmental challenges. He reaffirmed CDA’s commitment to enhancing its institutional capacity and fully utilizing UNEP’s expertise, experience, and capacity-building support to achieve tangible progress in environmental protection and carbon credit acquisition.
