Islamabad, January 30, 2026: Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan Mr. Akamatsu Shuichi on Thursday inaugurated a project for the installation of water filtration plants in seven communities of District Faisalabad, Punjab, aimed at improving access to safe drinking water for underserved populations.
The project was implemented by Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, a non-governmental organization with more than three decades of experience in humanitarian and development work across the country. It was funded by the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme, with financial assistance amounting to USD 70,201.
Under the initiative, seven water filtration plants have been installed in Peoples Colony 2, Badar Colony, Kuri Wala, 40 Mor Jaranwala, Chak No. 421 GB, Hussainabad in Faisalabad District, and Bamba Bola in Okara District. The inauguration ceremony was attended by officials from the Embassy of Japan, representatives of Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan, and members of the beneficiary communities.
The project addresses the urgent need for clean drinking water for more than 400 households, benefiting approximately 2,870 people, in areas where a large segment of the population is vulnerable to waterborne diseases due to contaminated water sources. Improved access to safe water is expected to significantly enhance public health and livelihoods in these communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Akamatsu congratulated Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan on the successful completion of the project and commended its role in delivering essential services to marginalized communities. He underscored that access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right and remains a key priority of Japan’s development assistance to Pakistan.
Reaffirming Japan’s continued support for the people of Pakistan, the ambassador expressed hope that the initiative would further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Japan and Pakistan.
