United Nations, February 14, 2026: A high-level Pakistan parliamentary delegation led by Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani met with Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on the sidelines of the Annual IPU Parliamentary Hearing 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters.
During the meeting, the Chairman Senate reiterated Pakistan’s firm and principled support for the United Nations as the central pillar of multilateral cooperation. Emphasizing Pakistan’s long-standing policy of good neighbourly relations and peaceful settlement of disputes, he underscored that a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, remains essential for durable peace and stability in South Asia.
Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani also drew attention to what he termed as destabilizing actions by India, particularly the unilateral move to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. He stated that such an action constitutes a blatant violation of the Treaty’s provisions and established principles of customary international law, warning that it threatens the lives and livelihoods of over 240 million Pakistanis. He stressed that such steps set dangerous precedents, especially at a time when climate stress and growing water scarcity demand cooperation and strict adherence to international agreements.
Highlighting Pakistan’s security challenges, the Chairman Senate briefed the UNGA President on the terrorist threats faced by the country. He stated that terrorist organizations including the TTP, BLA, Al-Qaeda, and ISIL-K are using Afghan soil to carry out attacks against Pakistan with impunity, posing serious risks to regional peace and security.
The Chairman Senate reaffirmed that the people of Pakistan strongly support the United Nations’ mission of promoting international peace and security, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights. He observed that amid multiple and overlapping global crises, the multilateral system is facing serious challenges, including persistent violations of the UN Charter and the continued non-implementation of long-standing UN Security Council resolutions.
Warning against the broader erosion of respect for international law and established legal instruments, he said such trends undermine the international order. He also highlighted the severe impacts of climate change on vulnerable countries like Pakistan, stressing the urgent need for collective action, climate justice, and strengthened international cooperation. He emphasized that the United Nations remains an indispensable platform for addressing these interconnected global challenges.
Speaking on the occasion, UNGA President Annalena Baerbock conveyed her condolences to the Government and people of Pakistan over the loss of lives in recent terrorist incidents. She noted that combating terrorism is a shared responsibility and in the interest of all countries. This meeting marked her first engagement with visiting high-level parliamentary delegations on the sidelines of the IPU Annual Hearing.
Welcoming the Pakistani delegation, she praised the high-level participation of senior lawmakers and appreciated Pakistan’s constructive and commendable role at the United Nations.
The meeting was also attended by Senator Saleem Mandviwala, Senator Farooq H. Naek, Senator Muhammad Abdul Qadir, and Senator Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari.
