Colombo, February 21, 2026: The opening Super Eights match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 between Pakistan national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team was delayed due to persistent rain at the R Premadasa Stadium on Saturday.

According to details, the entire venue was placed under covers as rain continued to fall after Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Match officials confirmed that overs would begin to be reduced at 7:40 pm Pakistan Standard Time (PST), while the cut-off time for a five-over contest is 9:46 pm PST.

Pakistan and New Zealand have faced each other 49 times in T20 Internationals, with the Green Shirts holding a narrow edge, winning 24 matches compared to New Zealand’s 23 victories.

In T20 World Cups, however, Pakistan enjoy a clearer advantage, leading the head-to-head 5-2 across seven encounters. Their most recent meeting in the tournament came in the semi-final of the 2022 edition, where Pakistan secured a comfortable seven-wicket win. New Zealand’s last T20 World Cup victory over Pakistan dates back to the 2016 edition, when they triumphed by 22 runs.

Both teams entered the Super Eights stage with similar momentum, having finished second in their respective groups after winning three of their four matches in the tournament.
