Beijing/Islamabad, April 16, 2026: China on Thursday welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at sustaining the fragile ceasefire in the Middle East, while specifically acknowledging Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing “welcomes all efforts conducive to ending the conflict” and commends Pakistan for its role in brokering the temporary ceasefire and supporting what it described as “just and balanced mediation.”
The remarks came amid reports that US–Iran talks may resume in Pakistan within the next two days following earlier rounds of negotiations.
China stressed that the immediate priority must be to prevent a return to hostilities and to preserve the momentum of the ceasefire. It reiterated that political and diplomatic engagement remains the only viable path to resolving the crisis.
The spokesperson also highlighted remarks made by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a recent meeting with regional leadership in Abu Dhabi, where he presented a four-point proposal on safeguarding peace and stability in the Middle East.
The proposal calls for:
- Upholding the principle of peaceful coexistence
- Respecting national sovereignty
- Strengthening international rule of law
- Promoting a balanced approach to development and security
China said the framework reflects its consistent position on conflict resolution and its continued emphasis on dialogue over confrontation.
Beijing reiterated its readiness to work with the international community to help restore lasting peace and stability in the Middle East and Gulf region.
It also underscored that Pakistan’s facilitation efforts are being closely observed and appreciated, particularly in creating diplomatic space for dialogue between key stakeholders.
The statement reflects growing international attention on Pakistan’s emerging role as a mediator in regional peace efforts, alongside broader multilateral engagement to prevent further escalation in the region.
