Harare, July 23, 2026: India produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the opening T20 International of the three-match series at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday, taking a 1-0 lead.

A disciplined bowling effort restricted Zimbabwe to a modest 125-7 before 15-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashed a scintillating maiden T20I half-century to steer the reigning world champions to victory with 40 balls to spare.

After electing to field first, India captain Shreyas Iyer saw his bowlers make early inroads as Zimbabwe slumped to 32-4 inside the first eight overs, including the dismissal of captain Sikandar Raza for just four.

Wessly Madhevere then attempted to revive the innings with a composed knock of 39 from 34 deliveries, striking three fours and a six. He added 32 runs with Ryan Burl, who contributed 26, before stitching together a 58-run partnership for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Tadiwanashe Marumani.

Marumani remained unbeaten on 27 off 20 balls, hitting two fours and a six, but Zimbabwe could only manage 125-7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav led India’s bowling attack with two wickets each, while Mayank’s economical figures of 2-18 in four overs earned him the Player of the Match award. Ravi Bishnoi and Shivam Dube chipped in with one wicket apiece.

In reply, India comfortably chased down the 126-run target in just 13.2 overs, losing only three wickets.

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stole the show with a breathtaking 19-ball 50, his maiden international half-century, featuring four fours and four sixes. The explosive innings gave India complete control of the chase from the outset.

Ishan Kishan added a steady 35 off 24 deliveries, while captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 28 from 24 balls to guide India home.

For Zimbabwe, fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani claimed 2-26 in his four overs, while Richard Ngarava picked up one wicket.

The second T20I of the three-match series will be played at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, with India aiming to seal the series.
