Islamabad, November 21, 2024 – Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has stated that while he personally supports dialogue, no negotiations are currently underway as talks cannot proceed under threats.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Naqvi emphasized that protests in the capital will not be permitted during specific times due to critical foreign engagements. “Protests are not being banned, but during key events, particularly with significant foreign visits scheduled, protests in Islamabad are not appropriate,” he said.
He noted that the city would host a 65-member Belarusian delegation on November 24, followed by a visit from the President of Belarus on November 25. “During such crucial times, holding protests here is not suitable. People are welcome to protest in their own regions but not in the capital,” Naqvi added.
The minister also questioned the timing of planned protests, highlighting a meeting between the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PTI Chairman Imran Khan just a day earlier. “The public must ask who stands to benefit from protests at this specific time,” he remarked.
Naqvi reiterated his stance on negotiations, stressing that talks will only take place once threats are removed. “We cannot negotiate under duress. Dialogue will resume when a conducive environment is ensured,” he stated.
On the issue of mobile service suspensions during protests, Naqvi said decisions regarding such measures would be finalized by tomorrow night. He also mentioned discussions with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government concerning terrorism cases, referencing the tragic attack that claimed the lives of 38 passengers in Parachinar.
The minister revealed that arrests during protests in Islamabad often include a significant number of Afghan nationals. “Among those detained, 20 to 25 individuals are frequently found to be Afghan nationals,” he noted.
Regarding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Naqvi clarified that it was beyond his authority. “Khan is facing multiple legal cases, and his release is a matter for the courts to decide,” he said.
Naqvi concluded by mentioning that he has been summoned by the Chief Justice to appear in court on Wednesday and assured compliance with any court orders.
