Gaza ceasefire deal takes effect after delay

Jerusalem, January 19, 2025- A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip took effect on Sunday after a nearly three-hour delay, pausing a devastating 15-month-old war that has reshaped the Middle East’s political landscape.

For the first time in over a year, Gaza residents reported a cessation of fighting, with no military strikes heard since approximately 0915 GMT, when the ceasefire officially began. This followed an intense period of Israeli airstrikes and artillery attacks that killed 13 Palestinians after the original 0630 GMT deadline.

The delay stemmed from a standoff over hostages, with Israel accusing Hamas of failing to submit the names of the first three individuals to be released. Hamas attributed the delay to “technical reasons,” while Palestinian officials, speaking anonymously, revealed that ongoing Israeli strikes complicated the process. By 0915 GMT, Hamas provided the names of Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari for release. Israel confirmed receipt but has not officially identified the hostages.

The ceasefire deal, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S., includes a phased prisoner exchange. Over six weeks, 33 of the 98 hostages held by Hamas—comprising women, children, and older individuals—will be released in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees. The process began with the release of three female hostages facilitated by the Red Cross.

The ceasefire marks a significant, albeit tentative, step toward ending a conflict that erupted after Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7, 2023, which killed over 1,200 Israelis. Israel’s subsequent military campaign devastated Gaza, killing nearly 47,000 Palestinians according to Gaza health officials.

Beyond Gaza, the war has sparked regional unrest, including clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon and heightened tensions with Iran. Despite heavy losses, Hamas retains its foothold in Gaza, complicating Israel’s vow to prevent the group’s return to power.

The ceasefire comes amid mounting global condemnation of the war’s humanitarian toll, with Israel facing international investigations into alleged war crimes. Domestically, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces pressure over security lapses and the Oct. 7 attacks.

As U.S. President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his January 20 inauguration, his administration, in tandem with outgoing President Joe Biden, has played a pivotal role in brokering the ceasefire. However, the absence of a postwar roadmap for Gaza raises questions about the region’s long-term stability.

This deal offers a fragile hope for peace but leaves the Middle East grappling with deep divisions and monumental rebuilding challenges.
