Islamabad, July 20, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday held talks with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture and other key sectors.
Anand, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, called on the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s House. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Syed Tauqir Shah and other senior officials also attended the meeting.
Welcoming the Canadian foreign minister, the Prime Minister said Pakistan and Canada enjoy friendly relations that should be further expanded, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, agri-foods, vaccine manufacturing, renewable energy, and the automobile and auto parts industry.
He conveyed his best wishes to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and said he looked forward to meeting him in the near future. Recalling his telephone conversation with Carney in April, Shehbaz Sharif also thanked Canada for supporting Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace.
Anita Anand thanked the Prime Minister for the warm welcome extended to her and her delegation and conveyed the good wishes of Prime Minister Carney.
She said her visit reflected Canada’s commitment to expanding its relationship with Pakistan and expressed her government’s interest in exploring new opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, mining, energy, and the automobile and auto parts sectors.
The Canadian foreign minister said the proposed Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA) would help boost investor confidence and encourage greater Canadian investment in Pakistan.
Both sides also acknowledged the important role of the Pakistani-Canadian community in strengthening ties between the two countries and agreed to exchange trade and mineral sector delegations to identify new avenues for bilateral cooperation and investment.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the signing of a protocol on phytosanitary regulations governing the import of Canadian canola into Pakistan.
The protocol was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
