ICC criticized for empty stands at Champions Trophy, calls grow to shift event to Pakistan

Dubai, February 21, 2025: The India vs. Bangladesh Champions Trophy 2025 match in Dubai on Thursday saw an unusually low turnout, with large sections of the 25,000-capacity Dubai International Cricket Stadium remaining empty. The sparse attendance left fans and analysts questioning the appeal of ODI cricket and the ICC’s venue choices.

India, known for drawing packed stadiums worldwide, kicked off their campaign with a commanding six-wicket victory over Bangladesh. However, the lack of spectators overshadowed their performance, sparking debates on the relevance of the Champions Trophy and the future of the 50-over format.

A similar trend was seen in Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand in Karachi, which also witnessed poor attendance. Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized the lack of enthusiasm, adding to growing concerns about fan engagement in ODIs.

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi weighed in on the discussion, questioning whether ODI cricket was losing its charm.“Watching the @ICC Champions Trophy cricket match between #India and #Bangladesh. Stands are empty. That would not happen at an #IPL game. Is the one-day format becoming irrelevant to the fans? What’s your view? Should one-day cricket be scrapped and more Test cricket?” he posted on X.

The disappointing turnout has fueled calls for the ICC to reconsider its approach. Some critics argue that the tournament should be moved entirely to Pakistan, which was originally designated as the sole host before a hybrid model was introduced to accommodate India’s participation. With low fan engagement in neutral venues, the question now arises: if a global cricket event cannot attract crowds, should it be played in a country where the passion for the sport is undeniable?
