Islamabad, September 11, 2024- The Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has proposed a Charter of Parliament between the government and the opposition. According to details, amidst the recent political turmoil resulting from the arrest of National Assembly members within the Parliament premises, intense exchanges have been ongoing between opposition and government members. During this time, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq proposed the Charter of Parliament, stating that regardless of whether our leadership chooses to sit together or not, can’t we, as members of Parliament, sit together?

While presiding over a session in the National Assembly, he emphasized that while criticism of each other is acceptable, respect for each member should also be maintained. He suggested that opposition and government members should sit together and establish rules. Ayaz Sadiq mentioned that production orders for the arrested National Assembly members were issued the previous day, and some security personnel were suspended as a result.

The Speaker noted that whether or not our leadership desires it, can we not, as parliamentarians, sign a Charter of Parliament? The session of the National Assembly was chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. PTI members chanted slogans demanding the issuance of production orders for the arrested members.

In his remarks, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said he would attempt to get to the bottom of the incident. He reiterated that whether or not our leadership desires it, we as parliamentarians should be able to sign a Charter of Parliament. He added that he had taken actions within his authority, including suspending the Sergeant-at-Arms for failing to stop those who entered the Parliament.

Sergeant-at-Arms among 5 others suspended.

On the other hand, the Speaker of the National Assembly has suspended five security officials for four months in response to the PTI’s outcry over the arrest of their members from the assembly premises.

According to an “office order” issued by the NA Secretariat today, Sergeant-at-Arms Muhammad Ishfaq Ashraf (BPS-20) was suspended “with immediate effect for a period of 120 days.”

The order specifies that during his suspension, he will continue to receive his pay and allowances as per applicable rules. The four officials were also placed under suspension for 120 days and “entitled to draw pay and allowances as admissible under the applicable rules”.
