Dhaka, March 24, 2025: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was rushed to the hospital on Monday after suffering a major heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) match in Savar.

The left-handed batter, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, complained of chest pain during the first innings while leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club. After fielding for just one over, he was taken to KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing Home, match referee Debabrata Paul confirmed.

Initially, Tamim planned to be airlifted to another hospital but was unable to travel due to his condition. He was then taken back to the original facility, where tests revealed a heart blockage. He underwent an emergency angioplasty to remove the blockage.

BKSP chief cricket coach Montu Datta shared that Tamim appeared in good spirits during the toss but later left the field and drove himself to the hospital after feeling unwell. “The doctors initially advised him to stay, but he insisted on leaving and was even arranging an air ambulance himself,” Datta added.

In an official statement, doctors confirmed the severity of the situation: “He returned to us in critical condition. We can confirm it was a heart attack, following which an angiogram and angioplasty were performed.” The statement added that the medical procedure went smoothly and that Tamim remains under observation. The swift coordination between medical staff at BKSP and the hospital played a crucial role in his timely treatment.

Tamim, 35, announced his international retirement in January 2025. The former opener scored over 15,000 runs across all formats, including 25 centuries—the most by any Bangladesh batter. He last represented Bangladesh in their home ODI series against New Zealand in September 2023.

The cricketing world is closely monitoring his recovery, with fans and former teammates sending their well wishes.
