Islamabad, April 8, 2025: In a disappointing development for aspiring scholars, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has officially announced the discontinuation of its Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for Pakistani students, ending a celebrated chapter of academic and cultural exchange that spanned over 15 years.

In a formal statement, the USEFP expressed regret over the program’s termination:

“We regret to inform you that after 15 incredible years, the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program for Pakistan (Global UGRAD) has come to an end. The US Department of State has informed USEFP that the Global UGRAD-Pakistan Program will no longer be offered.”

The announcement has come as a major blow to hundreds of students who had hoped to study in the United States under this prestigious exchange initiative. Educationists and alumni have voiced deep disappointment, noting that the program not only provided academic exposure but also empowered students through leadership development and cultural immersion.

“Over the years, Global UGRAD has provided life-changing experiences to thousands of students,” the USEFP noted. “It fostered academic growth, cross-cultural understanding, and leadership skills that have positively impacted communities across Pakistan.”

Since its inception in 2010, the Global UGRAD program enabled more than 2,657 Pakistani undergraduates to spend a semester at various US colleges and universities. For many, it marked their first international experience and a stepping stone to global opportunities.

The USEFP acknowledged the disappointment felt by recent applicants and expressed pride in the program’s legacy.

“We are immensely proud of the impact this programme has had on its participants and the communities they have touched,” the statement read.

While the closure of the program marks the end of a significant educational opportunity, the USEFP encouraged students to continue seeking avenues for personal and academic development.

“We sincerely appreciate your interest in the programme. While this chapter is closing, we encourage you to explore other exchange and scholarship opportunities that align with your aspirations.”

In its concluding message, the USEFP extended best wishes to all past and aspiring participants, saying:

“We wish you all the best in your academic and professional journeys.”

Established in 1950, the USEFP has long served as a cornerstone of educational collaboration between Pakistan and the United States, primarily administering the Fulbright Program, the US government’s flagship scholarship initiative.
