Islamabad, May 20, 2025: The federal cabinet has approved an extension in service for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, recognizing his outstanding leadership and strategic role in defending Pakistan’s airspace during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, launched in response to Indian missile strikes earlier this month.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as confirmed in a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. The extension comes as Air Chief Marshal Sidhu’s term was nearing its conclusion.

According to official sources, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) displayed exceptional professionalism and combat effectiveness during the recent military confrontation, successfully downing five Indian fighter jets and an Israeli-made Heron combat drone.

The downed aircraft included three Rafale jets, one MiG-29, one SU-series fighter and one Heron UAV.

These were shot down across multiple locations, including Bhatinda, Jammu, Akhnoor, Srinagar, and Avantipur, following India’s unprovoked missile attacks.

“The PAF’s swift and precise response during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos was critical in restoring deterrence and safeguarding national sovereignty,” said a senior government official.

The cabinet also decided to bestow high state honors on military personnel, veterans, martyrs, and civilians who rendered meritorious services during the operation.

The extension of the Air Chief’s tenure comes on the heels of another major military recognition: the elevation of COAS General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, the highest position in the Pakistan Army, also approved during Tuesday’s meeting.
