Dhaka, June 12, 2025: Bangladesh Cricket Board has named all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new One Day International (ODI) captain, replacing Najmul Hossain Shanto for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka next month.
The appointment marks a shift to split leadership across all formats for Bangladesh: Liton Das continues as T20I captain, Shanto remains Test skipper, and Mehidy now takes charge in the 50-over format.
Expressing his gratitude, Mehidy said:
“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer. I have every faith in this team—we have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition, and continue giving our best for the country.”
Bangladesh’s Chairman of Cricket Operations, Nazmul Abedeen, explained the rationale behind the appointment:
“The board felt Miraz’s consistent performances with bat and ball, his fighting spirit, and his energetic presence make him the ideal candidate to lead during this transitional phase. We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward in this format.”
Although this is Mehidy’s first official tenure as full-time ODI captain, he previously led the team in four ODIs last year in Shanto’s absence—two against Afghanistan and two against the West Indies—all of which ended in defeats. He also briefly captained the Test side, helping secure a draw in Jamaica after a loss in the first match.
Mehidy, 26, brings valuable experience with 105 ODIs under his belt. He is only the fourth Bangladeshi cricketer to achieve the double milestone of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in the format.
