Lahore, July 5, 2025: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Punjab on Ashura (10th Muharram), warning of potential flooding and disruptions in several major cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad.
The ongoing monsoon spell, which began earlier this week, is expected to persist until July 10, possibly leading to a rise in river water levels and triggering urban flooding in low-lying areas.
In response, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert and placed Rescue 1122 and Disaster Response Force teams on high alert. Citizens are urged to follow official safety guidelines and contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 in case of emergencies.
Lahore, after experiencing a hot and humid day, is expected to witness heavy showers and thunderstorms by late Saturday night. Temperatures in the city will range between 30°C and 37°C, with strong winds forecast for the coming days.
Meanwhile, Rawalpindi and Islamabad were soaked by overnight rainfall, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to declare a rain emergency. The Saidpur area recorded 80 mm of rain — the highest in the region — while other parts of the twin cities received between 15 mm and 40 mm.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that recent monsoon activity has resulted in 64 fatalities and 117 injuries across Pakistan over the past week.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather situation closely and have warned that more flash floods and rain-related incidents could occur if the system strengthens further.
Meteorologists have urged residents, especially those in flood-prone and under-construction areas, to stay vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and ensure drainage systems are cleared around their homes and neighborhoods.
