Lahore, August 1, 2025: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially banned the use of the country’s name in all privately-organised cricket leagues, following a diplomatic and sporting embarrassment during the World Championship of Legends (WCL) currently underway in the UK.
Sources revealed that the decision was made during a Board of Directors meeting held on Thursday, where senior PCB officials expressed strong disapproval over recent events involving Indian players refusing to take the field against the Pakistan Legends team — not once, but twice — in the second edition of the WCL. The incidents, broadcast globally, were seen as detrimental to Pakistan’s image on the international stage.
Although the Pakistan Legends have been permitted to participate in Saturday’s final against South Africa, the PCB has now imposed a strict ban on the future use of the country’s name — ‘Pakistan’ — in any team or league without formal, written approval from the board.
This move directly affects a rising number of unofficial and low-profile leagues in countries such as Zimbabwe, Kenya, and the USA, where the Pakistan name has frequently been used without oversight, often in events lacking professional standards or credibility.
Going forward, the PCB has clarified that no private entity will be allowed to use the name ‘Pakistan’ in any cricket-related capacity unless the board verifies the league’s legitimacy and governance structure. Violators will face legal action, the board warned.
In a rare show of consensus, the Government of Pakistan and the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry — which handles sports affairs nationwide — have backed the PCB’s position. The IPC has reportedly conveyed formal concerns to the board, urging stricter action to preserve national dignity in international sports, particularly in events not sanctioned by the PCB.
The decision marks a turning point in the PCB’s stance toward unregulated cricket ventures and sends a clear message to organisers worldwide: Pakistan’s name is not for casual use or commercial exploitation without accountability.
