London, August 3, 2025: The ongoing five-match Test series between India and England has etched its name into cricket history, breaking multiple long-standing records and delivering a batting masterclass across both teams.
The series has now produced an unprecedented 50 scores of fifty or more runs—a new world record for the most fifty-plus scores in a single five-match Test series. The tally includes 19 centuries and 31 half-centuries, with India contributing 28 and England 22 of those scores.
This landmark surpasses the previous record of 49 fifty-plus scores set during the 1920–21 Ashes series. Although the 1993 Ashes also featured 50 such scores, that achievement spanned six Tests, making this the first instance where the feat has been accomplished within just five matches.
The India-England series has also witnessed the highest aggregate of runs ever scored in a five-match Test series, overtaking the 6,606-run total set during the 1928–29 Ashes between England and Australia. The current series continues to deliver high-scoring thrillers, capturing global attention and thrilling fans with consistent batting dominance.
Amid the flurry of team achievements, England’s Joe Root added another major milestone to his already illustrious career. On Sunday, he became the first player to score 6,000 runs in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
The 34-year-old reached the landmark during his 69th WTC Test, continuing his reign as the tournament’s all-time leading run-scorer. Root has featured in all four editions of the WTC since its inception, underlining his consistency and longevity at the highest level.
His WTC record now includes 20 centuries, 23 half-centuries and batting average exceeding 52.
Root tops a prestigious list of WTC run-scorers that includes Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Ben Stokes, and Travis Head.
Earlier in the series, Root surpassed cricketing greats Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in men’s Test cricket history. He also climbed to joint-fourth on the all-time Test centuries list with 38 centuries, sharing the spot with Kumar Sangakkara.
Additionally, Root now holds the record for the most catches by an outfielder in Test cricket, a feat he secured during this series.
