UNICEF appoints Saba Qamar as Pakistan’s first national ambassador for child rights

Islamabad, October 11, 2024 – Acclaimed Pakistani actress Saba Qamar has been appointed as the first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The announcement comes just ahead of the International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually to spotlight the challenges and rights of girls worldwide.

Expressing her gratitude, Qamar said, “It’s an honor to join hands with UNICEF. I am committed to promoting our shared mission of ensuring that every child’s rights are protected, wherever I am.” She further added, “I am dedicated to playing my part for the children and youth of Pakistan, helping them dream big and achieve those dreams.”

In her role as UNICEF ambassador, Qamar will amplify awareness of critical child rights issues in Pakistan, using her platform to address challenges affecting young lives. Among the pressing concerns is child marriage, a practice that continues to hinder girls’ rights in the country. Pakistan currently has 19 million child brides, the sixth-highest number globally.

As ambassador, Qamar will work to bring attention to this and other significant issues that jeopardize the future of Pakistan’s children.
