Rawalpindi, October 6, 2025: The Punjab government has reinstated the jail trial of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan in the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case, allowing proceedings to resume inside Adiala Jail.
According to an official notification issued on Monday, the decision reverses an earlier order from September 15, which had shifted the trial venue outside the prison. The fresh directive enables the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) to continue hearings within the jail premises, with proceedings expected to resume as early as Tuesday.
To ensure maximum security, the Adiala Jail superintendent has sought additional deployment of Rawalpindi police, officials confirmed. The move follows heightened concerns over Khan’s ongoing legal battles and the sensitive nature of the GHQ attack case — one of several stemming from the May 9 violence that erupted after Khan’s arrest last year.
Previously, Imran Khan had appeared before the ATC Rawalpindi via video link, following the government’s earlier decision to conduct the hearings outside the jail. Monday’s notification, however, rescinds that arrangement, citing security risks and operational ease as key factors for reverting to in-prison proceedings.
The GHQ attack case remains among the most high-profile trials linked to the May 9 riots, in which protesters allegedly targeted key military installations nationwide. Authorities claim the violence was instigated by Khan’s arrest, and several senior PTI leaders are also facing charges in related cases.
The resumption of the jail trial underscores the gravity of the accusations against the PTI founder and reflects the government’s cautious approach to politically sensitive legal proceedings. With courtroom activity returning to Adiala Jail and security further tightened, the upcoming hearings are expected to draw significant national and international attention once again.
