Islamabad, October 11, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday announced the formation of a high-level steering committee to oversee the promotion and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) across key sectors, calling it essential for Pakistan’s economic transformation and digital future.

Chairing a meeting on the use of emerging technologies, the prime minister said the government aims to harness AI for economic growth, improved governance, and enhanced public services, according to an official statement.

“The government is working on a priority basis to promote information technology and artificial intelligence,” the statement quoted Sharif as saying. “We want to use artificial intelligence for the development of the national economy.”

The prime minister emphasized that Pakistan’s national policy on AI would be implemented effectively while ensuring responsible use and robust data protection measures.

Officials briefed the meeting that an expert advisory panel will also be established to guide AI deployment, regulatory safeguards, and capacity building.

Pakistan has already begun integrating AI into public systems, including the launch of an AI-based Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS) aimed at improving tax collection, reducing human intervention, and making customs operations more transparent and efficient.

In addition, the government has announced digital upgrades at southern ports to integrate AI-driven solutions for managing congestion, accelerating cargo processing, and boosting exports.

Sharif reiterated that the implementation of the digital economy would be made “more effective and inclusive” through the adoption of AI technologies, urging all departments to align with the country’s Digital Pakistan vision.
