Lahore, October 24, 2025: Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan Super League (PSL) management, accusing it of a “mediocre mindset” after his franchise was issued a legal notice threatening suspension for alleged breach of contractual obligations.
The notice, sent earlier on Thursday, followed repeated public criticisms by Tareen of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the PSL’s management practices. According to sources, the PSL sought a public apology from Tareen to avoid legal action — a move that has significantly escalated tensions between the board and the Multan franchise.
Late Thursday night, Tareen posted a video on social media platform X, appearing with the legal notice in hand. In the video, he said he “wanted to apologise” but demanded higher standards and professionalism from the PSL organisers. The clip concluded with Tareen tearing up the document, symbolising his defiance.
The controversy traces back to April, when Tareen questioned the PCB’s lack of innovation ahead of PSL 10. Sharing a podcast clip on X, he wrote:
“How is PSL 10 bigger and better? Same games, same teams – what’s new? Fed up with hollow words. PCB had time to plan innovations, but we’re repeating last year. Our biggest brand deserves more. Explain the vision!”
After backlash from other franchise owners, Tareen later softened his stance, writing:
“I love PSL — it’s a MADE-IN-PAKISTAN success story. My words were about pushing for real growth, not negativity… Let’s unite as owners to elevate the league.”
However, tensions reignited in July, when Tareen again criticised the PCB’s post-season celebrations, saying:
“Applause? You must be kidding. TV ratings down, attendance plummeting, digital engagement slowing — yet we’re celebrating? PCB, wake up.”
A PCB source said that Tareen’s repeated remarks had “damaged the league’s reputation” and violated specific clauses of the franchise agreement.
In response, a Multan Sultans spokesperson confirmed that the PCB’s legal notice “is not a termination notice” but threatens cancellation of the franchise agreement and a lifetime ownership ban for Tareen.
“Every statement he has made was in the best interest of the PSL, urging the league to aim higher,” the franchise statement read. “For the PCB management to treat constructive criticism as a crime is outrageous… Silencing honest feedback is not how great leagues are built.”
The episode has further intensified debate over franchise-board relations in the PSL, with several stakeholders urging the PCB to ensure greater transparency, accountability, and consistency in its dealings with team owners.
