Sydney, October 27, 2025: India batter Shreyas Iyer remains under medical observation in a Sydney hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining a laceration to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia.

According to a statement issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Shreyas is “medically stable and recovering well” but continues to be monitored closely by doctors.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI release stated. “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status.”

The 30-year-old suffered the injury after completing a running catch at point to dismiss Alex Carey. He immediately clutched his side in pain and signaled for medical assistance before being taken off the field. He did not return for the remainder of Australia’s innings.

A member of the BCCI medical team is stationed in Sydney to oversee Shreyas’s recovery, while the rest of the ODI contingent returned to India. The T20I squad, meanwhile, has already arrived in Canberra, where India begin their five-match series against Australia on October 29.

India won the third ODI by nine wickets, though Australia clinched the series 2–1 with victories in Perth and Adelaide.

Shreyas is not part of the T20I squad, and his participation in India’s next assignment — a three-match ODI series against South Africa starting November 30 in Ranchi — remains uncertain.
