Islamabad, November 19, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed federal and provincial authorities to begin early preparations to prevent any loss of life or property during next year’s monsoon season. He also ordered the immediate implementation of the short-term plan presented by the Ministry of Climate Change.

Chairing a high-level meeting to review preventive measures, the prime minister approved the ministry’s short-term plan and stressed its urgent execution. He instructed the Ministry of Climate Change, Ministry of Planning, and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to work in close coordination with provincial governments for integrated climate action and disaster preparedness.

The prime minister also called for convening a meeting of the National Water Council to facilitate national-level planning on water management, highlighting the importance of proactive strategies in mitigating climate-related risks.

“Being a developing country, a substantial portion of Pakistan’s GDP is repeatedly diverted to address the adverse impacts of climate change — funds that could otherwise be used for development projects,” the prime minister said. He further noted that Pakistan continues to suffer severe consequences despite contributing negligibly to global carbon emissions.

During the meeting, officials were briefed on international forecasts and indicators for next year’s monsoon, along with short, medium, and long-term plans to minimize losses.

The session was attended by federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Dr. Musadik Malik, and Attaullah Tarar, along with senior officials from relevant departments.
