Brisbane, December 4, 2025: Australia’s seasoned pacer Mitchell Starc on Thursday broke Pakistan legend Wasim Akram’s long-standing record to become the highest wicket-taking left-arm fast bowler in Test cricket during the second Ashes Test against England at The Gabba.

Starc claimed the key wickets of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook in the day-night clash, surpassing Akram’s tally of 414 wickets in 104 Tests with his 418th wicket in 102 matches. He later added three more scalps, finishing the opening day with 6/71 in 19 overs.

Top wickets by left-arm pacers in tests:

  • Mitchell Starc (Australia) – 418 in 102* matches
  • Wasim Akram (Pakistan) – 414 in 104 matches
  • Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka) – 355 in 111 matches
  • Trent Boult (New Zealand) – 317 in 78 matches
  • Mitchell Johnson (Australia) – 313 in 73 matches

Despite his record-breaking feat, the 35-year-old Starc remained humble, describing Akram as the “pinnacle” of left-arm pace bowling. In an interview with former England cricketer Michael Vaughan, Starc said:

“Wasim is still the pinnacle of left-armers and lined up there with the best-ever with the ball. So, yeah, I think he’s still better. I’ll reflect on it later.”

Akram himself congratulated Starc on the achievement, praising his dedication and talent. On social media, the Pakistani legend wrote:

“Super Starc! Proud of you, mate. Your incredible hard work sets you apart, and it was only a matter of time before you crossed my tally of wickets. I am pleased to give this to you! Go well, and keep soaring to new heights in your stellar career.”

Root hits century on first day

Meanwhile, England managed to reach 325/9, with Joe Root ending his century drought on Australian soil, providing a counterbalance to Starc’s brilliant bowling on an eventful opening day on of the second Ashes test, at The Gabba.
