Lahore, December 19, 2025: A special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Friday handed down heavy sentences to several senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in connection with the violent incidents of May 9.

ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul, delivering the verdict at Kot Lakhpat Jail, sentenced Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Ejaz Chaudhry and Umar Sarfaraz Cheema to 10 years’ imprisonment each. However, the court acquitted former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the related GOR Gate vandalism case.

The court recorded final statements of 21 accused persons, including Dr Yasmin Rashid, before announcing the verdict. During the trial, the prosecution produced 56 witnesses who testified about the events at Club Chowk and GOR Gate, where security cameras were damaged, police wireless equipment was smashed, glass at the GOR Gate was broken and other public property was vandalised. Police officials were also reportedly attacked while attempting to maintain law and order.

According to the prosecution, PTI leaders had allegedly incited party workers to engage in violence and rebellion during the May 9 unrest. The court also declared four of the accused as absconders, while the Race Course police had earlier submitted the challan in the case.

The sentencing marks a significant development in the aftermath of the May 9 incidents, which drew nationwide attention due to the scale of violence and damage to public and private property. Legal experts say the ruling underscores that political leaders can be held accountable for actions that endanger public safety and national security.
