Islamabad, October 24, 2024 (Muhammad Anwar Abbas)- The embassies of Germany and the Netherlands co-hosted a significant panel discussion titled “Media Freedom and Democracy: Challenges and Opportunities” on Thursday, underlining the crucial role of a free press in fostering democratic societies.

The event brought together journalists, diplomats, and community members for an open dialogue on the current state of the media. Both German and Dutch representatives emphasized that a free press is vital for strengthening democracy and promoting informed societies.

Speaking on the occasion, German Ambassador Alfred Grannas stated, “A free press is a precondition for a thriving democracy. This is why we offer journalists from around the world additional training through DW Academy, both in Germany and online.”

Hajo Provó Kluit, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Netherlands Embassy, added, “This is why the Netherlands supports a three-year project by the NGO Free Press Unlimited, aimed at empowering rural journalists in Pakistan to strengthen their role as accountability advocates.”

Moderated by journalist and anchor Munizae Jahangir, the panel featured prominent Pakistani journalists Zia Ur Rehman and Maria Memon, who shared their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities faced by the media in Pakistan today. Topics ranged from censorship and safety concerns to the potential of digital media in enhancing transparency.

The event underscored the commitment of both Germany and the Netherlands to support media freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. While challenges persist, the discussions highlighted significant opportunities for collaboration and growth in Pakistan’s media landscape.
