Mirpur-AJ&K, January 31, 2026: President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mehmood, passed away on Friday at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

According to official sources, Barrister Sultan had been suffering from liver cancer and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Islamabad, where he breathed his last earlier today.

His funeral prayers will be offered at 3:00 pm on Sunday in Khari Sharif, while burial arrangements are expected to be announced later.

A senior leader backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Sultan was elected as President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in August 2021, securing 34 votes out of 52 in the AJK Legislative Assembly.

Earlier, he was elected from LA-3 Mirpur-III, marking his seventh victory in nine general elections since entering electoral politics in 1985. At the time, he was serving as PTI’s regional president.

Barrister Sultan Mehmood was widely regarded as an influential Kashmiri leader who consistently raised the Kashmir issue at national and international forums and played a key role in AJK’s political landscape over several decades.
