New Jersey: The garden state

Imagine cruising along the iconic Jersey Shore, the Atlantic Ocean stretching endlessly to your right, salt-kissed breeze rushing through open windows, while the distant glow of boardwalk lights twinkles like fallen stars against the night sky. The rhythmic crash of waves, the sweet scent of saltwater taffy, and that magical moment when the sunset paints the sea in fiery hues—it all wraps around your soul like a warm embrace.

Or picture yourself wandering deep into the Pine Barrens, ancient pitch pines towering overhead, the air thick with the earthy aroma of resin and wild blueberries. Silence broken only by birdsong and the rustle of leaves, carrying echoes of Revolutionary battles fought on this very ground.

This is New Jersey, not merely a corridor squeezed between New York and Philadelphia, but a vibrant, living jewel where history, innovation, natural splendor, and multicultural energy converge to make every visitor feel instantly at home.

Affectionately dubbed the Garden State, New Jersey packs astonishing diversity into its compact 7,354 square miles—America’s fifth-smallest state by land area. Yet, as of July 1, 2025, its population stands at 9,548,215 (U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates), up by 41,861 residents from the previous year, making it the fastest-growing in the Northeast and one of the top 10 nationally for numeric growth. The nation’s most densely populated state, every county pulses with urban vitality, every corner brims with stories.

Layered like its landscapes, New Jersey’s history runs deep. One of the original thirteen colonies, it earned the title “Crossroads of the Revolution” for hosting over 100 battles. George Washington’s daring Delaware River crossing turned the tide here. In 1787, it became the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. From Lenape indigenous roots through Dutch and English settlement, industrial boom, and waves of immigration, New Jersey has forged a powerful identity. Today, it ranks among America’s wealthiest, most educated, and diverse states: median household income at **$103,556** (2020-2024, in 2024 dollars, placing it near the top nationally), high per capita income, and consistent leadership in public education, healthcare, and innovation.

Education shines brightly. Home to Princeton University—one of the nine colonial colleges—and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, alongside top-ranked public schools. Recent highlights include the revitalized Edelman Fossil Park & Museum and Princeton University Art Museum, opening new worlds for learners of all ages.

Tourism surges forward with record momentum. In 2024, 123.7 million visitors poured in, spending a historic $50.6 billion—up 3.1% from 2023—with a total economic impact of $80.4 billion supporting over 507,000 jobs. Projections for 2025 point to 126.4 million visitors and $52.3 billion in spending. The horizon glows even brighter for 2026, fueled by FIFA World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium (including the Final) and America250 celebrations, promising millions more arrivals and billions in added impact—potentially over $3 billion regionally from the World Cup alone.

The 130-mile Jersey Shore enchants: Atlantic City’s dazzling boardwalk with casinos, live shows, and legendary saltwater taffy; Cape May’s timeless Victorian charm; Liberty State Park’s breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Grounds for Sculpture blends art and gardens in magical harmony; the Pine Barrens offer kayaking and pristine stargazing; Jenkinson’s Aquarium, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Sterling Hill Mining Museum (with its glowing fluorescent minerals) captivate families year-round. Hidden gems abound: tranquil Laurence Harbor beaches, panoramic vistas from High Point State Park, quirky wonder at the Albert Einstein exhibits, or riverside charm in Lambertville.

At its heart lies unparalleled diversity—nearly one in four residents born abroad, ranking it among the most diverse states. The Pakistani community thrives vibrantly, especially in Paterson’s “Little Karachi” and Edison’s Oak Tree Road. Estimates place Pakistani Americans in New Jersey at around 41,000 (recent data), with the broader Tri-State area home to far more. These neighborhoods pulse with halal eateries, Pakistani groceries, mosques, cricket matches, Eid celebrations, Urdu poetry gatherings, and spirited Independence Day rallies on August 14. From Jersey City to central and southern towns, Pakistani Americans excel in business, tech, medicine, education, and community leadership, enriching the state’s economic and cultural fabric.

Economically, New Jersey reigns as a powerhouse in pharmaceuticals (global hub), finance, logistics, biotech, IT, and digital media—bolstered by major ports and proximity to powerhouse cities. The statewide minimum wage rises to $15.92 per hour effective January 1, 2026, offering stronger support for working families, including our vibrant immigrant communities.

Last column, we wandered New York’s sleepless streets. Today, step into its quieter yet equally dynamic sibling—where skyscrapers kiss the clouds, gardens whisper history, and diversity weaves the strongest threads.

If you haven’t yet discovered the Garden State, the time is now. Drive the shore as waves sing their eternal song. Hike Pine Barrens trails where silence heals. Savor pancakes at classic diners (New Jersey boasts more per capita than anywhere else). Taste sun-ripened tomatoes, blueberries, and corn that carry the true flavor of home.

New Jersey salutes you—its revolutionary spirit, soul-soothing shores, world-class education, endless discoveries, and the warm embrace of communities like ours that truly make it home.

Visit once, and you’ll carry a piece of it forever. The Garden State doesn’t just welcome you—it claims a corner of your heart.
