Iran signals willingness to compromise on nuclear deal if US discusses sanctions relief

Tehran, February 15, 2026: Iran has indicated it is willing to consider compromises to revive a nuclear agreement with the United States, provided Washington is prepared to discuss lifting economic sanctions, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi told the BBC in an interview published Sunday.

Takht-Ravanchi emphasized that Tehran remains open to negotiating curbs on its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief but firmly rejects linking the issue to other topics, including missile development.

He confirmed that a second round of nuclear talks between the two sides will take place on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland, following initial discussions in Oman earlier this month. “[Initial talks went] more or less in a positive direction, but it is too early to judge,” he said.

A U.S. delegation, including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is expected to meet with Iranian officials on Tuesday morning, with Oman serving as mediator.

Iran’s atomic chief recently stated that the country could agree to dilute its most highly enriched uranium if all financial sanctions are lifted — an example cited by Takht-Ravanchi to demonstrate Tehran’s flexibility. However, the deputy foreign minister reiterated that Iran will not accept zero uranium enrichment, which had been a key stumbling block in previous negotiations, as the U.S. views enrichment as a potential pathway to nuclear weapons.

The remarks come nearly a decade after former President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which had limited Iran’s nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

The upcoming talks mark a continuation of efforts to restore the landmark deal, which remains a central issue in U.S.-Iran diplomacy and regional security in the Middle East.
