Karachi, February 27, 2026: Veteran Pakistani stars Faryal Gohar and Jamal Shah, once regarded as one of the entertainment industry’s most admired couples, recently reunited on the television show Shan e Suhoor to candidly discuss the reasons behind their divorce, more than 30 years later.
The appearance answered a long-standing question among fans who had continued to wonder why the couple, who married young and divorced in 1992, eventually parted ways. Both actors clarified that their separation was rooted in personal differences rather than conflict, bitterness, or betrayal.
Faryal Gohar shared that despite the divorce and her move abroad in 1995, mutual respect between them never faded. “We never deliberately stopped speaking to each other,” she said, adding that the core issue was Jamal Shah’s desire for independence. “He valued freedom and did not want to be confined by marriage,” she explained, noting that she understood his mindset. Jamal Shah agreed, admitting that at the time he was not “marriage material.”
Jamal also recounted a specific incident that ultimately led to the end of their marriage. He said that while attempting to establish an art institute in Islamabad with another woman, he ignored Faryal’s advice to distance himself from the venture. Despite warnings from the woman’s aunt as well, he went ahead with the project, which eventually failed. According to Jamal, this episode became the decisive breaking point, though marital challenges had existed since as early as 1987.
Both actors stressed that their divorce was a mutual and respectful decision. Reflecting on her outlook, Faryal said, “I never believed a couple owns each other; when someone wants to leave, it should be respected.”
Their conversation was widely appreciated for its honesty and maturity, offering a rare example of former celebrity partners revisiting their past with clarity, dignity, and mutual understanding.
