Moscow, March 1, 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed his condolences to Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, over the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and members of his family.

In a personal message addressed to President Pezeshkian, Putin described the killing as a “cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law,” and expressed his deepest sympathies to the Iranian leadership and people.

“Please accept my deepest condolences on the assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, and his family members,” the Russian president said.

Putin paid tribute to Ayatollah Khamenei’s role in strengthening bilateral ties, saying that in Russia, the Iranian leader would be remembered as an exceptional statesman who made a significant personal contribution to fostering friendly relations between Moscow and Tehran, elevating them to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The Russian leader concluded his message by asking President Pezeshkian to convey his sympathy and support to the Supreme Leader’s family and loved ones, the Iranian government, and the people of Iran.

The message underscores Russia’s solidarity with Iran amid heightened regional tensions following the reported assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei.
