Kuala Lumpur, March 2, 2026: Riyadh’s iconic King Fahd Sport City Stadium will host both the opening match and the final of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, tournament officials announced on Monday, underlining Saudi Arabia’s growing role as a global football host ahead of the 2034 World Cup.

Saudi Arabia, which has already been awarded the FIFA World Cup 2034, will stage the Asian Cup from January 7 to February 5, 2027. The event is widely seen as a major test run for the Kingdom’s preparations to host world football’s biggest tournament.

“The King Fahd Sports City Stadium will provide the backdrop for both the eagerly anticipated opening match — featuring hosts and three-time Asian champions Saudi Arabia — as well as the final,” the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said in a statement issued from Kuala Lumpur.

With a capacity of more than 70,000, the Riyadh venue — popularly known as “The Tent” because of its roof inspired by traditional Bedouin architecture — is the largest of the eight stadiums selected for the tournament. In addition to the opening and final, it will also host four group-stage matches, a round-of-16 fixture and a quarter-final.

Other Asian Cup matches will be played in Jeddah and Al Khobar, expanding the tournament’s footprint across the Kingdom.

The AFC said match pairings and kick-off times will be confirmed during the final draw, scheduled to take place on April 11 in Riyadh.

Defending champions Qatar, who hosted and won the 2023 Asian Cup after the tournament was moved from China due to COVID-19 restrictions, will be aiming to retain their continental crown.

The 2027 Asian Cup is expected to showcase Saudi Arabia’s expanding sports infrastructure and organisational capacity, as the Kingdom accelerates preparations for hosting the World Cup seven years later.
