Beijing, April 10, 2026: Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of China–U.S. “Ping-Pong Diplomacy” and the launch of China–U.S. youth sports exchange events.
Highlighting the historic significance of the 1971 exchange, Xi said Chinese and American elder statesmen, guided by “exceptional political wisdom and strategic foresight,” reopened the door for friendly relations between the two peoples, creating what he described as the remarkable story of “a small ball moving the globe.”
He noted that today’s youth exchanges between Chinese and American participants reflect the continuation of that legacy, with new sports initiatives aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties and fostering mutual understanding.
President Xi expressed hope that all sectors of Chinese and American society—particularly the younger generation—will draw wisdom from history and deepen mutual understanding through exchange and cooperation. He encouraged both sides to learn from each other and move forward together in a spirit of collaboration.
He further stated that such engagement would not only strengthen bonds between the two peoples but also contribute to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China–U.S. relations.
The message comes as both countries mark over five decades since the landmark “Ping-Pong Diplomacy,” widely credited with paving the way for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Washington.
