Mumbai, April 29, 2026: A sequel to the iconic Bollywood film 3 Idiots is officially in development, with actor Aamir Khan confirming that the script is in its final stages.
According to Aamir Khan, the upcoming film will reunite the original characters, with the story reportedly set around a decade after the events of the 2009 blockbuster.
He added that director Rajkumar Hirani is leading the project along with writer Abhijat Joshi. The team is currently refining the script to preserve the tone, humour, and emotional depth of the original film.
Aamir Khan also confirmed his return to one of his most memorable roles, expressing excitement about revisiting the character after many years.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became one of the most successful and critically acclaimed films in Indian cinema. It starred Aamir Khan alongside R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani.
The film followed the journey of three engineering students navigating academic pressure, friendship, and life choices, and remains a landmark in contemporary Indian filmmaking.
In related developments, Aamir Khan recently became emotional during a promotional event for his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming film Ek Din. Videos circulating on social media showed the actor visibly moved, with co-star Sai Pallavi and Junaid Khan seen comforting him on stage.
During the event, Aamir Khan praised Sai Pallavi’s performance, calling her one of the finest actors in the country and suggesting audiences would be surprised by her role. Speaking about his son’s performance, he jokingly said Junaid “has also done a decent job,” adding that it is difficult to be fully objective as a father.
