Lahore, May 3, 2026: Peshawar Zalmi were crowned champions of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 after defeating Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final at Lahore on Sunday night, thanks to a superb all-round performance from Aaron Hardie.
Hardie first produced career-best T20 figures of 4-27 to dismantle Kingsmen for just 129, before returning with the bat to score an unbeaten 56 off 39 balls and guide Zalmi to victory after a shaky start in the chase.
The triumph marked Zalmi’s second PSL title, their first since 2017, making them only the third franchise in league history to win multiple championships after Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars.
Kingsmen’s remarkable journey ends in heartbreak
Despite the defeat, Hyderabad Kingsmen’s campaign remained one of the most remarkable stories of the season. The franchise had lost its opening four matches and became the first team in PSL history to recover from such a start and reach the playoffs. They entered the final after winning seven of their previous eight games.
However, their dream run ended in disappointment as the batting lineup crumbled under pressure, resulting in the lowest first-innings total ever recorded in a PSL final.
After winning the toss, Zalmi captain Babar Azam elected to field first on a pitch offering some assistance to the seamers. The decision proved decisive as Kingsmen suffered a dramatic middle-order collapse.
At one stage, Kingsmen looked comfortably placed at 69-2 during the powerplay, but their innings unravelled rapidly as they lost four wickets for just two runs in the space of eight deliveries, including two run-outs.
The collapse began when Sufiyan Muqeem trapped Usman Khan lbw. Moments later, a mix-up between Saim Ayub and Irfan Khan resulted in Irfan’s dismissal, before Glenn Maxwell fell on the next ball attempting an aggressive stroke against Nahid Rana.
Another run-out further deepened Kingsmen’s misery when Michael Bracewell produced a direct hit to dismiss Kusal Perera. The wicket sparked brief drama after Perera complained that Nahid Rana had obstructed him while running between the wickets, but the third umpire upheld the dismissal.
Amid the collapse, Saim Ayub stood tall with a fighting 54 off 50 balls — his maiden half-century of the season. The left-hander started aggressively, scoring 30 runs from his first 14 deliveries, and shared a promising 35-run stand with Marnus Labuschagne, who made a brisk 20 off 12.
Ayub showcased his attacking range with stylish boundaries against Nahid Rana early in the innings, but was later forced into consolidation as wickets tumbled around him.
The longest partnership of the innings lasted only 24 balls, between Ayub and Hunain Shah for the eighth wicket.
Hardie returned in the 18th over to remove Ayub and Akif Javed, completing his maiden four-wicket haul in T20 cricket and bowling Kingsmen out for 129 in 18 overs.
Hardie and Samad rescue Zalmi after top-order collapse
Zalmi’s chase also began disastrously as Kingsmen’s pace attack reduced them to 40-4.
Mohammad Ali struck twice in the opening over, dismissing both Babar Azam and Mohammad Haris. Hunain Shah then removed Kusal Mendis, while Akif Javed accounted for Michael Bracewell to put Kingsmen firmly in control.
However, Aaron Hardie launched a counterattack that completely shifted momentum. The Australian all-rounder smashed three boundaries in one over from Hunain Shah and rebuilt the innings alongside Abdul Samad.
The duo stitched together a match-winning 85-run partnership, calmly rotating strike while punishing loose deliveries. Samad played a vital supporting role with a fluent 48 off 34 balls.
As the target drew closer, Samad accelerated dramatically, smashing Mohammad Ali for a six and a four before falling at deep midwicket while attempting to finish the game in style with only five runs required.
Victory was sealed in the following over when Farhan Yousuf guided a bouncer from Hunain Shah to the fine leg boundary, sparking celebrations among the Zalmi camp.
