Islamabad, May 6, 2026: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures, reviewing progress on the government’s cost-cutting initiatives.
During the session, Dar assessed the current status of austerity steps previously announced by the government and emphasized the need for strict adherence, citing persistently high international fuel prices. He underscored that enforcing conservation measures is a “national duty” for both government institutions and the public.
The deputy prime minister noted that while austerity remains essential, any critical or urgent government functions affected by these measures could be brought before the committee for consideration, ensuring that essential state operations continue without disruption.
The meeting was attended by key federal ministers, including those for petroleum, information technology and telecommunications, and climate change, along with the minister of state for finance. Senior officials such as secretaries from the cabinet, establishment, commerce, petroleum, and culture and heritage divisions were also present, alongside other relevant stakeholders.
The government has been pushing a range of austerity and conservation policies in recent months to manage fiscal pressures and reduce energy consumption amid global economic challenges.
