Islamabad, May 12, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to review food security and the fertilizer stock situation in the country, directing authorities to ensure uninterrupted fertilizer supply to farmers under all circumstances.
During the meeting, the prime minister emphasized the need for immediate planning to secure alternative fertilizer supplies from Central Asian countries in light of potential disruptions to supply chains from Gulf states.
He also directed officials to maintain adequate fertilizer reserves for both the Kharif and Rabi crop seasons to safeguard agricultural productivity and national food security.
Addressing participants, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said accelerating work on plans to establish new fertilizer plants for increasing local production was essential to meeting the country’s agricultural requirements.
“Fulfilling the needs of the agricultural sector to ensure food security is the government’s top priority,” the prime minister stated.
The premier further instructed relevant ministries and institutions to continuously monitor fertilizer availability across the country and ordered strict action against artificial shortages, profiteering, and hoarding.
Officials briefing the meeting informed participants that uninterrupted natural gas supply to fertilizer factories was continuing to support domestic production. They added that sufficient fertilizer reserves were currently available for Kharif crops.
The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Khan Cheema, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, and senior government officials.
