Dhaka, June 9, 2026: All-rounder Mosaddek Hossain produced a match-winning performance as Bangladesh defeated Australia by 86 runs (DLS method) in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday, with rain bringing an early end to the contest.
The result marked Bangladesh’s first-ever ODI victory over Australia, ending a 21-year wait since their previous win against the five-time world champions on June 18, 2005, in Cardiff during the NatWest Series.
The match was ultimately curtailed due to persistent rain, with Australia trailing the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) target at the time of interruption, confirming a winning start for the hosts in the series.
Batting first, Bangladesh posted 284 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs, anchored by a brilliant unbeaten 86 from Mosaddek Hossain. Returning to the side after a long absence since 2022, he struck seven boundaries and three sixes off 70 deliveries to guide the innings through the final overs.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67 off 86 balls, hitting nine fours and a six, while Tanzid Hasan provided an aggressive start with 54 off 44 deliveries. Towhid Hridoy added 31, and Taskin Ahmed gave a late flourish with 20 off 16 balls.
For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the standout bowler with figures of 3 for 38, while Liam Scott, Matt Renshaw, and Xavier Bartlett chipped in with one wicket each.
In reply, Australia were restricted to 191 for 9 in 42.2 overs as Bangladesh delivered a disciplined and consistent bowling performance.
Cameron Green top-scored for the visitors with 52 off 66 balls, while Alex Carey made 47 from 62 deliveries. Cooper Connolly contributed 35, but Australia struggled to build partnerships as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Nahid Rana led the bowling attack with impressive figures of 4 for 41, while Mustafizur Rahman and Mosaddek Hossain claimed two wickets each. Taskin Ahmed also picked up a wicket to cap a strong all-round display by the home side.
The rain interruption confirmed Bangladesh’s victory via the DLS method, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and a landmark win over Australia in ODI cricket.
