Islamabad, June 25, 2026: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, calling for a collective national effort to protect society, particularly the youth, from the growing threat posed by narcotics.
In his message on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26, the Prime Minister said Pakistan stands with the international community in renewing its resolve to address one of the world’s most pressing social challenges.
He noted that the day serves as a reminder of the immense human, economic and social costs associated with drug abuse and trafficking, as well as their devastating impact on communities and nations worldwide.
Referring to this year’s theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” the Prime Minister said it highlights the evolving and increasingly complex nature of the global drug crisis.
“Pakistan remains steadfast and fully committed to addressing all threats associated with narcotic drugs, including the emergence of new substances, illicit trafficking networks and the increasing accessibility of drugs, especially among young people,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the government is strengthening national capacities, enhancing institutional coordination and expanding cooperation with international partners to curb drug trafficking. He stressed that dismantling illicit trafficking networks remains essential to ensuring a safer and more secure society.
Highlighting the importance of protecting future generations, Shehbaz Sharif described drug-free educational institutions as a national priority and a critical step towards safeguarding young people from the menace of narcotics.
He said the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) is actively implementing measures to prevent drug trafficking, reduce drug demand, raise public awareness and facilitate the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals affected by drug addiction. According to the Prime Minister, the government’s integrated approach—combining law enforcement, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation—reflects a comprehensive strategy to tackle the challenge.
Paying tribute to the personnel of the ANF, the Prime Minister honoured the force’s martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
“I pay a special tribute to the brave martyrs of the Anti-Narcotics Force whose courage, sacrifice and unwavering sense of duty remain a source of immense pride for the nation,” he said.
The Prime Minister further stated that the government is enhancing the capabilities of all institutions involved in counter-narcotics efforts. In collaboration with provincial governments, awareness and prevention programmes are being expanded in educational institutions, while treatment and rehabilitation facilities are being strengthened across the country.
He added that Pakistan is also deepening international cooperation through intelligence sharing, joint operations and regional partnerships aimed at disrupting illicit drug trafficking networks.
Concluding his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged parents, teachers, educational institutions, community leaders, media organizations and young people to play an active role in the fight against drugs.
“Raising awareness, promoting prevention and fostering a healthy and resilient society are our shared national responsibilities,” he said.
