Naqvi urges political consensus on new provinces, governance reforms

Islamabad, July 30, 2026: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday called on all political parties to forge a national consensus on key constitutional and governance issues, including the creation of new provinces, saying Pakistan’s existing administrative system had failed to meet the country’s needs.

Addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit 2026 in Islamabad, Naqvi said lasting economic and governance reforms would only be possible if political stakeholders collectively resolved longstanding national issues.

“There is only one solution,” he said, urging political parties to sit together “for a day, a month or even a year” to settle matters relating to administrative units, new provinces and other national issues.

He stressed that unless the country’s governance structure was reformed through political consensus, Pakistan would continue to face the same challenges regardless of conferences and policy discussions.

Naqvi argued that the current administrative framework had collapsed and required fundamental restructuring. He said ordinary citizens expected affordable living conditions and efficient public services, but existing governance arrangements had failed to deliver.

The interior minister also highlighted the country’s fiscal challenges, saying the federal government continued to prepare budgets under financial constraints while relying on additional borrowing without addressing structural weaknesses in the economy.

Describing himself as a strong supporter of democracy, Naqvi said democratic governance must also evolve to meet modern administrative requirements. He maintained that Pakistan needed institutional reforms while remaining committed to democratic principles.

Referring to Pakistan’s diplomatic achievements, Naqvi said the country’s foreign policy successes were commendable but amounted to “firefighting” unless accompanied by comprehensive domestic reforms.

He also stressed the need to create additional administrative units to improve governance and encourage local ownership of development, arguing that emerging leadership at the local level would help improve public service delivery.

Speaking about the country’s youth, Naqvi said young Pakistanis sought merit-based employment opportunities and an efficient governance system rather than short-term incentives such as stipends or electronic devices.

Addressing representatives of business chambers and trade bodies attending the summit, the minister said the private sector had an important role in shaping Pakistan’s political and economic future. He urged all stakeholders to support structural reforms aimed at improving governance, strengthening institutions and creating a more sustainable economic framework.
