Govt to partially suspend internet, mobile services amid PTI protest

Islamabad- November 21,2024- The federal government has decided to partially suspend internet and mobile services in Islamabad, as well as parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, in response to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned protest on November 24.

According to sources, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will activate its firewall for mobile internet services starting November 22, with services being suspended from November 23.

This move comes as the PTI, which has consistently demanded the release of its jailed founder Imran Khan and a restoration of its mandate — allegedly “stolen” during the February 8 elections — prepares for a protest march in the federal capital. Authorities fear the protest could turn into a sit-in, potentially escalating tensions, as similar demonstrations in the past have led to clashes between law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and PTI workers.

Sources indicate that internet and mobile services may be suspended at any time in specific areas, disrupting users’ ability to access social media platforms and download multimedia content.

In anticipation of unrest, the Islamabad administration has imposed Section 144 for two months, banning public gatherings of five or more people, processions, rallies, and demonstrations. Additional security forces, including over 10,700 police personnel from Punjab, have been placed on standby. Tear gas, rubber bullets, and anti-riot gear have also been allocated.

Islamabad police have requisitioned 8,000 additional personnel from Punjab, Sindh, and Kashmir, while Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) are already deployed. Authorities may seal off the capital using shipping containers by Friday, November 22.
