London, December 3, 2024- The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has unveiled its prestigious 100 Women for 2024 list, highlighting two of Pakistan’s most influential women: singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani and activist Dr. Maharang Baloch. Their inclusion underscores their remarkable contributions to society and their inspiring roles on the global stage.

Kiani and Baloch join an extraordinary lineup of women from around the world, including astronaut Sunita Williams, rape survivor and advocate Gisèle Pelicot, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad, among others.

Hadiqa Kiani: A voice beyond music

Hadiqa Kiani rose to prominence in the 1990s, becoming a household name in Pakistan with her versatile voice and defining contributions to the South Asian pop music scene. Beyond her musical achievements, Kiani is celebrated for her extensive humanitarian work and her role as a UN Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador.

In the aftermath of Pakistan’s devastating 2022 floods, Kiani launched the Vaseela-e-Raah project to support victims in Balochistan and South Punjab. This initiative not only provided immediate aid but also aimed for long-term rehabilitation. By 2023, the project had built 370 homes and essential facilities for displaced families. Her unwavering commitment to social causes cements her legacy as a multifaceted icon of change.

Maharang Baloch: A doctor turned activist

Dr. Maharang Baloch emerged as a leading voice for justice in Balochistan, where she has tirelessly campaigned against enforced disappearances. In late 2023, Baloch led a historic 1,600-kilometer march to Islamabad, mobilizing hundreds of women to demand answers about their missing loved ones. Despite being arrested twice during the journey, her resolve remained unshaken.

As the founder of the Baloch Yakjehti (Unity) Committee (BYC), Baloch has become a symbol of resistance and advocacy for human rights. Notably, her dedication earned her a spot on the TIME100 Next 2024 list, which honors emerging global leaders.

Global recognition

Both Kiani and Baloch exemplify resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to making a difference. Their inclusion in the BBC’s 100 Women for 2024 celebrates not just their individual achievements but also the indomitable spirit of Pakistani women making their mark on the world.
