Hybrid model for Indo-Pak matches: BCCI rejects PCB’s proposal

Dubai, December 4, 2024 – Talks aimed at resolving the stalemate between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy venue have reached another impasse.

The deadlock began when the BCCI refused to send its team to Pakistan, citing security concerns. In an attempt to resolve the issue, the PCB proposed a hybrid model under which India’s matches would be held in Dubai, but with specific conditions. However, the BCCI has firmly rejected the proposal, particularly the condition to adopt a similar hybrid arrangement for ICC events hosted in India.

According to The Telegraph India, the BCCI conveyed its position to the ICC, stating, “There is no security threat in India and hence no question of accepting such an arrangement.”

India is slated to host several marquee ICC tournaments in the coming years, including the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025, the T20 World Cup in 2026 (co-hosted with Sri Lanka), the Champions Trophy in 2029, and the ODI World Cup in 2031.

The PCB is facing increasing pressure as the ICC evaluates its options. Reports suggest that Pakistan could lose its hosting rights for the Champions Trophy if the current impasse continues. Previously, the PCB had threatened to withdraw from the tournament altogether should the ICC decide to relocate the event to another country.

Despite the setbacks, efforts to find a resolution are ongoing. “All relevant parties are working towards finding an amicable solution to end the crisis, and the ICC board is expected to reconvene in the coming days,” the report added.

The ICC’s ultimate decision will not only determine the Champions Trophy’s host nation but may also establish a framework for addressing geopolitical and security challenges in organizing future international cricket events.
