PM orders installation of modern cargo scanning system to combat smuggling

Islamabad, January 17, 2025 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to implement an international-standard cargo scanning system in Karachi and other major trading hubs to curb smuggling and enhance trade efficiency.

Chairing a review meeting on transit cargo and tracking systems, the prime minister emphasized replacing outdated tracking and scanning mechanisms with advanced, modern technology. He also instructed the relevant departments to ensure third-party validation of the quality of services provided by cargo tracking entities.

“The old systems must be replaced to tackle smuggling effectively. Modern technology will enhance transparency and efficiency in our trade operations,” the prime minister stated.

PM Shehbaz noted a significant reduction in smuggling due to improvements in the tracking system and highlighted the benefits of these measures. He cited sugar exports worth $211 million to Afghanistan as an example, made possible by curbing illegal trade activities.

The prime minister further stressed that an integrated communication system and improved cargo tracking mechanisms would position Pakistan as a regional hub for transit trade, boosting economic activity and connectivity with neighboring countries.

The meeting was attended by key government officials, including Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Division Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and other senior officials.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing trade practices, reducing smuggling, and fostering regional economic integration.
